Foreign policy is typically developed and implemented by political, military, economic allies in collaboration with their diplomats. As the number of authoritarian leaders and populist nationalist regimes grows, such negotiation is increasingly considered weakness. This is happening against the backdrop of urgent global problems caused by and resulting in crises across many countries and regions.  Issues such as climate change, terrorism and extremism, growing economic divisions, etc. know no boundaries.

What diplomatic strategies are needed to address these trends and increase the effectiveness of American problem solving?

Our speaker,
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is Senior Counselor at ASG and leads the firm's Africa practice. She is also a Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. She has had a long and distinguished 35-year Foreign Service career, including an ambassadorship in Liberia, postings to five other countries, and tenure in a UN Mission. From 2013-2017, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. Prior to that appointment, she served as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources, leading the team in charge of the State Department's 70,000 member personnel.
