This year's Annual Awards Dinner Honoring Social Studies Educators of Excellence in the Inland Empire features Amy Tyson, author of The Wages of History: Emotional Labor on Public History's Front Lines, associate professor of history and director of American Studies at DePaul University. She makes history live for students and the public through character interpretation. Many social studies teachers relish playing historical roles in class and/or assigning students to create historical performances and interpretations as part of their evaluation of learning.

Public history through role playing and costumed interpretation is compelling and draws many people to learn about the past who would not normally relate to it. But how do interpreters investigate the past? What if the characters they portray are not likeable or have values that are not acceptable today? How much selection of topics and  "artistic license" is appropriate in creating a balanced and valid historical experience?  How are the lives of interpreters in living museums impacted by the experiences of their work?

This celebration of social studies success in the Inland Empire is not to be missed. Acknowledge the outstanding work of your colleagues by nominating one of them for recognition and enjoy an evening of laughter and learning co-sponsored by Riverside County Office of Education, San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools, and the Inland Empire Council for Social Studies.
