  • Meet the New H-SS Coordinator at California Department of Education

    Stacey Greer has recently joined the California Department of Education (CDE) as a consultant for history-social science (HSS) and secondary literacy in the Professional Learning Support Division. Stacey has been a social studies educator for eighteen years, having taught middle school and high school before focusing on professional development as a program coordinator and Teaching American History Project Director for the UC Davis site of the California History-Social Science Project.

     

    One of Stacey's main tasks is supporting her office's work on the CDE's Common Core Professional Learning Modules. These free, online modules provide information, videos, and models of how to implement the Common Core State Standards into classroom instruction. The office has already published the first four of these modules: an overview, the "English Language Arts: Reading Informational Text," and two mathematics modules. Later this spring the office will publish the "English Language Arts: Writing to Inform, Argue, and Analyze" module. Stacey is working with Los Angeles County Office of Education on the Content Literacy in History/Social Studies, Kindergarten through Grade Five, which will be followed by a similar module for grades six through twelve.     Stacey also contributes to the CDE's participation in the Secondary Literacy Partnership. This past year the partnership hosted a series of free online webinars "Transitioning to the California Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects." The four webinars are archived at Schools Moving Up. The partnership is planning another series of webinars for 2013-2014 as well as a one-day Secondary Literacy Summit to be held on October 25th at the San Diego County Office of Education.

     

    As the consultant for HSS, Stacey wants to learn about all of the important work being done by social studies organizations and teachers across the state. She hopes to be a resource to the whole social studies community by connecting educators with resources and professional learning opportunities. She manages the Department's HSS professional learning Web pages and has just created a listserv to share new HSS resources and professional learning opportunities with the field.   • The Art of Magic in Egypt

    Ancient Egyptian magical practices are the focus when two UCLA professors conduct an entertaining and richly illustrated lecture at Cal State San Bernardino’s Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art. Magic affected every aspect of ancient Egyptian life – from everyday healing to royal intrigues. The material remains of ancient Egyptian magical practices include fascinating magico-medical papyri, amulets and assorted figurines. UCLA professors Jacco Dieleman and Elizabeth A. Waraksa will share the results of their personal investigations into the making and use of these artifacts, which were created to heal and protect.Admission if free; parking is $5.   • Volunteer to Judge at the 2013 National History Day - CA April 26-28 01

    It is your commitment that makes this event a success!  National History Day is a year-long educational program sponsored by the Orange County Department of Education, encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, and create final projects that present their work. These projects can be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national level, where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

  • 5th Grade Teachers Offered Opportunity to Experience History at Colonial Williamsborg

    2013 Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute for Riverside and San Bernardino County 5th Grade Teachers in Williamsburg, Virginia, June 30 – July 6, 2013

    Once again, Riverside and San Bernardino County fifth grade teachers are being offered the opportunity to attend the nationally recognized Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute held in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, during the summer. Selection is competitive. Designed to prepare fifth grade teachers to teach American history under the guidelines of the State of California’s History-Social Science Framework and Content Standards, this intensive eight-day institute will immerse participants in early American history at places where some of its most important events took place. Instruction and interpretation will be provided by resident historians and by educators from the staff of Colonial Williamsburg and other sites.

    The Williamsburg Foundation will provide transportation, room and board, and give accommodations for teachers on track during the dates of the Institute. This opportunity is being made by generous donors from throughout the state who see the importance of California teachers having in-depth understandings of the principles of the beginnings of our democracy. Our two counties have been given places for eight (8) teachers to attend.

    Teachers must complete an application that includes a current résumé, a recommendation from their school principal, a general letter of support, and a history lesson plan. Applicants must address the questions included on the application. A teacher may join with another fifth grade teacher from their school district and apply as a team, but each teacher must fill out an individual application and will be considered individually. Participating teachers will be expected to develop units of study based on their week in Williamsburg and to teach them in their classrooms during the 2013-14 school year. They are also expected to offer a professional development session to their colleagues.

  • Free Materials to Teach about Fred Korematsu on His Birthday, January 30th

    Fred Korematsu Day is celebrated on his birthday each year at the end of January to recognize his courageous fight against the Japanese American Internment which led to the WWII 1944 Supreme Court case, Korematsu v. United States. This is a good time to connect Fred’s story with other civil rights champions, examine key civil liberties issues, and remember the stories of the 120,000 people (approximately 70% were American citizens) who were interned in concentration camps without due process of law.

    The Korematsu Institute (www.korematsuinstitute.org) has a wealth of free teaching materials that help students learn about Fred and the Japanese American internment during World War II.  Some items include:

    ·  a K-12 teaching guide,
    ·      a Fred Korematsu classroom poster,
    ·      the 24 minute version of the Emmy Award winning video, “Of Civil Wrongs and Rights, the Fred Korematsu Story.”
